UNAVCO is a private, non-profit organization headquartered in Boulder, Colorado. UNAVCO manages and supports RESESS through its Education and Outreach Division under the direction of Dr. Susan Eriksson. Dr. Eriksson is also the Principle Investigator on the NSF grant from which RESESS is partially funded. UNAVCO staff participate as mentors for RESESS, exposing interns to cutting-edge research and technology in the geosciences. UNAVCO is committed to increasing the number of people in underserved populations represented in the solid earth sciences.

Our partner program, SOARS (Significant Opportunities in Atmospheric Research and Science) is administered by UCAR (University Corporation for Atmospheric Research) in Boulder, Colorado. SOARS enters its tenth year in 2006 and strives to broaden participation in atmospheric and related sciences by encouraging involvement of students from historically underrepresented groups. In addition to providing unique research internship opportunities, SOARS promotes a proactive approach to learning, including mentors for research, writing, and community; a community of peers; and exercises in leadership and team building.

IRIS (Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology) is a university research consortium dedicated to exploring the Earth's interior through the collection and distribution of seismographic data. IRIS programs contribute to scholarly research, education, earthquake hazard mitigation, and the verification of a Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. Support for IRIS comes from the National Science Foundation, other federal agencies, universities, and private foundations.

IRIS also conducts its own Summer Undergraduate Internship Program. Details can be found at http://www.iris.edu/about/ENO/internship.htm.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) in Golden, Colorado will provide science mentors for research experiences at the National EarthQuake Center. USGS serves the Nation by providing reliable scientific information to describe and understand the Earth; minimize loss of life and property from natural disasters; manage water, biological, energy, and mineral resources; and enhance and protect our quality of life.

Dr. Eric Bauer of Highline Community College is heading the community college component of RESESS. The goal for this sub-project is to build a network of community colleges across the country who know about RESESS and can use RESESS resourcesto help students make a smooth transition to four-year colleges and into graduate school. Dr. Bauer will work with the Department of Geological Sciences at Central Washington University to engage students from both schools in a field experience. http://flightline.highline.edu/geology/

The Department of Geological Sciences at Central Washington University will help coordinate a field trip with CWU geological sciences undergraduate students hosting community college students at CWU and participating on a local field trip in Cascadia.

RESESS is funded in part, by a grant from the National Science Foundation [NSF Grant GEO-OEDG #0503613] under Opportunities for Enhancing Diversity in the Geosciences. UNAVCO provides all other support for the RESESS program. Funding for UNAVCO comes from both the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) through various grants.
